Mo Farah is British Somalilander who just won 10,000m Gold for Britian at European Championships

Mo Farah is British Somalilander

Mo Farah went from prankster to historymaker when he won Britain’s first gold medal here in Barcelona last night.

In the biggest race of his life, Farah led home  a British one-two to take the European 10,000 metres title ahead of Chris Thompson.

In so doing he became the first British man to win the event at either a Europeans, World Championships or Olympic Games.

Not bad for a 27-year-old whose claim to fame used to be that he jumped naked into the River Thames off Kingston Bridge.

British distance legends Brendan Foster and David Bedford never managed it – winning 10,000m gold that is. Yet as the sun set on a perfectly clear day in the Catalan capital, mighty Mo – who came to London as a 10-year-old refugee from wartorn Somalia and was barely able to speak a word of English – wrote his name up in lights.

“Amazing,” he beamed as he wrapped himself in both the Union Jack and Somaliland flags and set out on an emotional lap of honour.

“One-two has never been done before and it feels so great, especially as I had big doubts in the winter.”

Farah had collapsed with exhaustion at the end of the European Cross-Country Championships in Dublin in December.

Yet seven months later this race was his big chance and he knew it – the fastest runner in the one major championship out of reach of the allconquering Africans. And he had the motivation, having been denied European 5,000m gold by 0.09secs in Gothenburg four years ago.

Farah parked himself at the back at the start of the 25-lap test, easing himself into midfield on the third circuit before moving to the front with Thompson on lap 16.

As the leading pack thinned to six runners, he moved out of Thompson’s slipstream and stretched his legs, aware that Spanish rival Ayad Lamdassem was full of running.

Then Farah broke into a smile and challenged his opponent to take it on.

Lamdassem eased ahead but rather than panic, Farah turned round to Thompson and beckoned him on, as if to say ‘silver is yours for the taking pal’.

Farah then flicked the switch and powered clear all.

Somaliland new President announces his cabinet

President Ahmed Mohamed M. Silanyo

(Somalilandpress)

Hareigsa –  Somaliland new president Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo announced today his cabinet for the next government of Somaliland. The cabinet includes 20 ministerial positions and six deputy of minister.

In a press conference at Hargeisa presidential palace, the new presidents addressed the nation and announced his cabinet. The cabinet is half of the previous government.

The cabinet includes two women ministers and one deputy minister. This is first time that Somaliland cabinet has this of number women representation. This is a fulfillment of President Silanyo campaign promises. The President made campaign promise that women will present 25% of his cabinet. This is seen a progressive move by Somaliland citizens and many women organizations have praised these appointees.

Before the president announced his cabinet, the president gave a long speech in which he detailed different aspects of the policy of the new government. He asked for the people’s support of the new government. He said that he chose his cabinet based on expertise and qualifications and after long consolation with intelligentsia of the country.

Also the president called for the release of all political prisoners, who are arrested under the previous government. The president called for the armed militia in Eastern part of the country to throw their arms and start constructive dialogue with the national government. He highlighted some of the goals of his government, which include the development in agriculture and fishery sectors fighting poverty and increasing social welfare services to the “Mujahidin of SNM.”

The president said that he will work closely with neighboring countries to increase cooperation to fight extremism and pirate activities in the India ocean. Mr. Silanyo called to make new allies in the Arab governments and China. He said that his government will fight corruption by increase transparency and holding official accountable.

Somaliland youth groups have expressed disappointment after the president made many promises to them during his campaign. The cabinet does not include any youth member.

“We are very happy that the new president appointed 3 women to ministerial positions. But we are disappointed that the president has forgotten about us. We are not blaming him personally. Until tribalism and nepotism cease to exist in our politics, the youth will not take on leadership positions that it deservers.” Nimco Aadan, youth organization member and employee of the UN Development programs told our reporter in Hargeisa.

HARGEISA, Republic of SomaliLand — The newly-elected president of Somaliland was sworn in Tuesday following June polls widely acclaimed as peaceful and democratic.

Outgoing president Dahir Riyale Kahin handed over power to Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo during a ceremony at the presidential palace in the capital Hargeisa.

“I solemnly transfer power to the new president, my brother Ahmed Silanyo, who defeated me in the recent elections,” said Riyale, who had been in power since 2002.

“I will work with him by giving my support and I call upon all of you to unite in his support,” he added. “There is a huge and difficult task ahead of our brother so let us help him succeed in his work.”

Silanyo, who has a degree from the London School of Economics and runs the Kulmiye party, is Somaliland’s fourth president since the territory unilaterally proclaimed its independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991.

“I ask for your support to fulfil my commitments and, as of tomorrow, I will start appointing my government,” Silanyo said at the ceremony.

The elections were held on June 26, on the day of Somaliland’s 50th anniversary of independence  from Britain.
