Mo Farah is British Somalilander who just won 10,000m Gold for Britian at European Championships
Mo Farah went from prankster to historymaker when he won Britain’s first gold medal here in Barcelona last night.
In the biggest race of his life, Farah led home a British one-two to take the European 10,000 metres title ahead of Chris Thompson.
In so doing he became the first British man to win the event at either a Europeans, World Championships or Olympic Games.
Not bad for a 27-year-old whose claim to fame used to be that he jumped naked into the River Thames off Kingston Bridge.
British distance legends Brendan Foster and David Bedford never managed it – winning 10,000m gold that is. Yet as the sun set on a perfectly clear day in the Catalan capital, mighty Mo – who came to London as a 10-year-old refugee from wartorn Somalia and was barely able to speak a word of English – wrote his name up in lights.
“Amazing,” he beamed as he wrapped himself in both the Union Jack and Somaliland flags and set out on an emotional lap of honour.
“One-two has never been done before and it feels so great, especially as I had big doubts in the winter.”
Farah had collapsed with exhaustion at the end of the European Cross-Country Championships in Dublin in December.
Farah parked himself at the back at the start of the 25-lap test, easing himself into midfield on the third circuit before moving to the front with Thompson on lap 16.
As the leading pack thinned to six runners, he moved out of Thompson’s slipstream and stretched his legs, aware that Spanish rival Ayad Lamdassem was full of running.
Then Farah broke into a smile and challenged his opponent to take it on.
Lamdassem eased ahead but rather than panic, Farah turned round to Thompson and beckoned him on, as if to say ‘silver is yours for the taking pal’.
Farah then flicked the switch and powered clear all.
