Somaliland President meets UAE Minister of Higher Education

Somaliland President Ahmed Silanyo met the UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan at his palace in Abu Dhabi on Sunday

ABU DHABI — President Ahmed Silanyo met the UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan at his palace in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Sheikh Nahyan facilitated a meeting between the Somaliland delegation and over 60 local and multinational business leaders based in the Gulf nation. The businesses, some of the largest in the region, congratulated President Silanyo for creating open and optimal investment environment and for maintaining stability in the country. They promise to send a business delegation to Somaliland to study the country and investment opportunities in the coming weeks.

Sheikh Nahyan said the UAE was ready to help Somaliland in the areas of security, economy and development. He promised to connect local and international companies in the UAE to Somaliland to increase the volume of capital investment, while continuing to assist Somaliland with its humanitarian needs. He added his department will help structure and lift the education standards in the country.

The President thanked Sheikh Nahyan and the other delegates for their warm hospitality. He briefed them of the country’s achievements, investment and business opportunities. He also told them a new investment law will ensure that his government creates good conditions for foreign investment. The president equally highlighted the challenges in the country including the high unemployment, ongoing drought and the enormous water scarcity and water quality problems. He requested the help of UAE since its the leading foreign direct investment destination in the Middle East and is home to major water companies and desalination plants.

Abu Dhabi, the seat of the government of UAE, consumes 550 liters of water per person per day while in Somaliland on average less than 30 liters of water per person per day are consumed.

The Somaliland delegation, UAE officials and the 60 or so business leaders later had lunch at Sheikh Nahyan’s palace.

The President and his delegation which includes Mohamed Abdullahi Omar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdirisaq Khalif Ahmed, Minister of Trade, Industrialization and Tourism, Abdullahi Mohamed Dahir, Presidential spokesman, Hersi Ali H. Hassan, Chief of Cabinet and first lady Amina Sheik Mohamoud will be in the Gulf nation until Thursday.
